Session Description

Current Issues in Securities Regulation II

Professor Orts continues discussions from the Week I: Foundation course regarding "climate change" in public opinion surrounding the securities industry. The session adapts to what is currently fueling the change in public sentiment.

 

In recent sessions, Professor Orts, using lecture and case studies, educated participants on:

  • The "crash of 2008;" including the housing bubble, securitization, subprime mortgage defaults and the ratings agencies failure
  • International perspectives on the U.S.-centric mortgage lending crisis
  • The future of self-regulation, as discussed by Treasury staff, world economists, etc.
  • Updates from relevant summits (e.g., G20)
  • The true issues behind credit default swaps
  • New financial regulations, including the Capital Purchase Program, Economic Emergency Stability Act, TARP, Temporary Liquidity Guarantee Program, Commercial Paper Funding Facility and Money Market Investor Funding Facility
