NASD Foundation Funds Investor Education Program for Public Education Employees
Washington, D.C. — The NASD Investor Education Foundation has awarded a grant of $354,500 to the National Association of Investors Corporation's (NAIC) BetterInvesting to develop and deliver an investment education program to public education employees nationwide. BetterInvesting, dedicated to providing sound investment education and information to help Americans become successful lifetime investors, is partnering with the NEA Member Benefits Corporation, a subsidiary of the 3.2 million-member National Education Association.
The project, called Investing in Your Future, will provide a blueprint on how to educate teachers and other education employees about personal finance and investing.
"To secure a sound financial future, it is essential to understand financial principles and investment techniques," said Mary Schapiro, Chairman of the NASD Investor Education Foundation, who also serves as Chairman and CEO of NASD. "This grant gives participating teachers access to high-quality investing education in a convenient, on-demand format. And because it serves those who work with students every day, the program has the potential to enhance school-based expertise around this important issue."
The program will be available free of charge to participants. It will include Web-based stock and mutual fund analysis tools, educational resources and a game to encourage participants to construct quality portfolios. The program will be grounded in research and designed to serve as a "best practices" model for delivering Web-based investor education to the target audience.
"Our mission is to create a nation of educated individual investors, and this partnership will enable us to reach millions of Americans," said Richard A. Holthaus, Chairman and CEO of NAIC's BetterInvesting. "We are eager to launch this new initiative with the NEA and NASD Foundation."
"The opportunity to work with BetterInvesting and the NASD's Investor Education Foundation on this worthy project reinforces our commitment to providing financial education to our members," said Reg Weaver, NEA President. "Given the current climate surrounding Social Security and both private and public pension plans, education programs of this nature are even more critical for public education employees."
