Intern Testimonials: Michael Kaufman
In college I became interested in a career in financial services, and first heard about FINRA after speaking to recruiters at a career fair hosted by my school. I graduated from Binghamton University School of Management in the spring of 2013 with a double major in Finance and Management Information Systems. The following summer I interned at FINRA, which gave me the opportunity to expand my knowledge of technology and how FINRA applies it to financial market regulation.
As an intern I worked with big data technology on a major FINRA project, which collects and accurately identifies every transaction and trade of exchange-listed equities and options across all U.S. markets. I assisted the team in proposing a solution that would track billions of these transactions each day in order to detect any discrepancies that should be brought to the attention of stock market regulators. This initiative will give FINRA a more complete view of market transactions. I also worked on FINRA's cloud computing solutions and agile management programs for aligning business and technology capabilities.
What I most valued in my internship was the optimistic support and guidance provided by my senior managers, and the research and organizational skills I acquired. As an intern I could freely interact with FINRA professionals, which gave me the confidence to approach senior management, a skill that I believe helped me obtain my full-time position. If I hadn't learned that I wouldn't be where I am now.
