Mediation Settlement Day
This annual event is sponsored by the FINRA Office of Dispute Resolution, the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR-GNY) and a coalition of alternative dispute resolution programs, bar associations, community based programs, schools, public and non-profit organizations concentrated in the New York City area, and extending beyond to upstate New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California and Washington, DC. Mediation Settlement Day takes place on Thursday, October 18, 2018.
What Mediation Settlement Day Is
Mediation Settlement Day is organized by a coalition of mediation providers with the objective of raising awareness about the many benefits of mediation and the wealth of available resources. On Mediation Settlement Day, organizations conduct special programs designed to promote mediation and to educate potential parties and attorneys about the mediation process. Our aim is to encourage parties to try mediation for the first time and to reinforce its value and effectiveness to those who have benefited from it before. Mediation is an efficient, user-friendly means for resolving differences.
Who Should Attend the Mediation Settlement Day Kick-Off Celebration Event
Anyone interested in becoming a mediator or learning more about mediation as an alternative means for resolving disputes should attend. This event provides excellent networking and learning opportunities for parties, attorneys, mediators, and individuals, corporate and law firm representatives. Come and get to know some new talent you may want to use in an upcoming case. Meet qualified and experienced mediators who counsel may not yet have on their radar.
Join fellow professionals for the 17th annual Mediation Settlement Day Kick-Off, a free event that recognizes the important work of mediators, educates the public about the benefits of mediation, and allows lawyers, mediators, and students to network with the mediation and legal communities.
This year’s theme highlights the ways in which Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes are effective in achieving substantive and procedural justice. Processes like mediation are widely recognized for empowering parties to secure a result that is self-determined and often unobtainable in court. From federal appellate mediation to restorative justice in criminal court cases – ADR and Access to Justice (A2J) intersect in numerous ways.
This evening will explore how ADR is used to support A2J – such as the many free and low-cost ADR services that are available to litigants in various court settings – as well as brainstorm how the breadth of ADR services and programs can expand to further reach those who might benefit.

What happens on Mediation Settlement Day on Thursday, October 18, 2018?
Many sponsors actively participate by commemorating Mediation Settlement Day. They send announcements to clients, parties, judges, arbitrators, display posters to publicize the benefits of mediation, or set up a table in their own facilities with a mediator or representative to discuss mediation, explain the process and its benefits, and to answer questions. Some organizations provide extra neutrals standing ready to mediate cases on or around Mediation Settlement Day. Other programs arrange for mediators to serve at reduced rates for the event or hold special training sessions.
What Mediation Is
Mediation is an effective tool for resolving disputes that is gaining in its popularity and use. It is a cost-saving, efficient approach to resolving disputes in which a trained, impartial mediator helps parties negotiate and reach a settlement. The process is unique because rather than having one side "win" and another side "lose," the mediator assists the parties with reaching a resolution that is acceptable to all. Once an agreement is reached, the parties usually conclude the mediation process by voluntarily signing a binding settlement agreement.
