NASD Foundation Grant Underwrites Commission Dedicated to Strengthening Students' Financial Literacy

Washington, D.C. — The NASD Investor Education Foundation has awarded a grant of $147,623 to the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) to conduct research and provide recommendations on how to improve the financial literacy of today's youth.

The project, called K-12 Financial Literacy: Policy and Practice, will establish a commission to analyze each state's current K-12 education policy as it relates to investor education and will publish a report to help policymakers assist the states in improving the types and quality of financial literacy programs available to public school students in the United States.

State boards of education provide policy oversight for the public schools and also serve to set course, graduation and achievement standards. For this project, the NASBE will coordinate with approximately 400 members of state boards, along with chief state school officers, to examine the status of investor education nationwide in order to create and disseminate policy recommendations to all states and review and promote curriculum resources for integrating financial literacy into existing curriculum.

The NASD Investor Education Foundation, established in 2003, supports innovative research and educational projects that give investors the tools they need to better understand the markets and the basic principles of financial planning. The Foundation has awarded more than $4.5 million in total to organizations for educational programs and research projects targeting the underserved segments of the population.
